#1714029: Omnissa's Journey: From VMware Cloud on AWS to Native AWS Services - 5th December 2025
| Description: |
Omnissa, the 4th largest VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC-A) customer, faced a critical transition following Broadcom/VMware's EUC unit divestiture to KKR. The project involved migrating 5,500+ VMC-A hosts across 8 regions, with a potential annual revenue of $59M for a 1-year subscription model. Initially, a VMC-A migration was preferred, but Broadcom's decision to remove AWS's ability to resell VMC-A led to a pivot towards AWS native services. The AWS team, including SA and CSM, quickly developed a comprehensive migration strategy to EC2 and RDS, overcoming challenges such as Microsoft licensing and complex database infrastructure. The migration progressed steadily from March 2024, with production migration starting in January 2025. By March 2025, the project was on track for 50% migration, with $22M ARR out of the estimated $38M. The team successfully navigated technical constraints, financial considerations, and customer preferences, ultimately aiming to complete the migration by mid-April 2025, potentially saving Omnissa $21M annually. |
